The nostalgic old-time convenience store takes you back to your childhood dreams.

Where to go on weekends? If you live in northern Taiwan, there’s a new spot to check out starting this week. The “2010 Gold Mining Festival” hosted by Taipei County’s Gold Ecological Park not only offers hands-on metal craft DIY and other performances, but also centers around the theme “Golden Times • Reliving the Past – Ruifang Old-Time Convenience Store Special Exhibition,” aiming to bring back fond childhood memories. The exhibition runs from June 25 (Friday) to August 29.

Taipei County’s Gold Ecological Park

In the past, when transportation wasn’t as developed as it is today and convenience stores weren’t yet on every corner, the old-time convenience store was the most important supply hub in the community. It offered all kinds of daily necessities — food, drinks, toys for kids, tobacco and alcohol for adults, cosmetics for women, and more. It was also a great place to connect with others and build relationships, essentially serving as a friendly “neighborhood hub” that combined the roles of a convenience store, supermarket, post office, and rest stop.

Taipei County’s Gold Ecological Park

For this special exhibition, the Gold Ecological Park collaborated with Jiufen Local History Museum, which has deep roots in regional cultural history. On display are wooden pinball machines that haven’t been seen for over sixty years, a series of metal toys, and eco-friendly DIY toys such as darts made from cigarette boxes, vividly handcrafted dragons woven from grass rope and wire, and sailboats made from aluminum cans. The toy section will also feature creatively restored retro playthings — definitely worth exploring.
