Historical Art "Walled" In: Hagåtña Murals in Guam
Guam, an ultra-popular vacation destination and a dream island in the hearts of many, recently saw the unveiling of the village mural "We Are Hagåtña" by the Guam Visitors Bureau and the Mayor of Hagåtña. The mural showcases the rich historical and cultural side of Guam, and through the colorful artwork of artist Tim Hanley, ordinary walls are transformed into vivid pieces of art.
Hagåtña, located in central Guam, is home to the island's capital, legislature, and administrative buildings. The name "Hagåtña" originates from "Haga," meaning "blood." The village murals transform ordinary roadside walls into historically meaningful artworks, using beautification to promote the unique history embedded in every aspect of the community.
Hagåtña Mayor John Cruz said: The village murals reflect the vibrant lifeblood of the village and the island, covering everything from saints and historical figures to heritage sites. Viewers can explore the entire historical trajectory of Guam through the works.

Artist Tim Hanley has previously painted iconic historical figures such as Pope John Paul II, as well as depicted sites like the Agana Marina Governor’s Complex and the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica.
