The “2010 FIFA World Cup” has finally come to an end. This year’s most talked-about figure wasn’t Uruguay’s top scorer Diego Forlán, nor Germany’s Golden Boot winner Thomas Müller—but rather Paul the Octopus from the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. However, his eight accurate match predictions accumulated quite a bit of fan frustration, leading to a flood of octopus-themed menu items as supporters sought revenge through indulgent octopus dishes.

Casual Favorite: Takoyaki

Among the various octopus dishes, the casual and beloved takoyaki has become the most popular. Originating in Osaka, Japan, takoyaki remains hugely popular in the city, largely due to the nearby Seto Inland Sea, which yields large, high-quality octopuses. When cooked, their flesh turns a vibrant red and offers a satisfying chew. Osakans mix diced octopus into a wheat flour batter, then cook it into golf ball-sized rounds on a spherical griddle. Topped with bonito flakes and drizzled with a sweet sauce similar to okonomiyaki, this simple dish is both affordable and delicious, making it a local favorite.

Takoyaki can be considered one of the most humble—and cheapest—street snacks around. There’s even a saying in Japan: every Osaka household owns a set of takoyaki-making tools. While that might be a slight exaggeration, it does show just how integral takoyaki is to Osaka’s food culture. Koga-ryu Takoyaki, located near Amerikamura’s Okita Park, was one of the first vendors in the area to sell takoyaki. Their unique recipe blends 14 different seasonings, resulting in an exceptionally flavorful bite. For just 300 yen, you get 11 pieces—and at peak hours, you’ll see long lines of eager customers.

Gourmet Takoyaki Kaiseki Set

Beyond its street-food roots, takoyaki can also be enjoyed in an upscale way. The restaurant Takocho elevates takoyaki into a kaiseki-style dining experience, innovating everything from the tableware and ambiance to the cooking techniques, offering a refined and elegant way to savor it. Takocho’s kaiseki set features octopus as the star ingredient, including vinegared octopus, soy-glazed grilled octopus, sakura-style simmered octopus, and octopus ball clear soup. Even the dessert is an unexpected delight: octopus ice cream, sure to surprise and excite diners.
