Did you plan where to go during the three-day New Year’s Day holiday in 2017? The Tainan City Tourism Bureau has carefully selected and organized the most fun itineraries for the holiday. Whether you want to rock out at a concert to ring in the New Year, watch the sunrise to welcome the first light, soak in hot springs and enjoy delicious food, explore historic sites and stroll through alleys in the city, or head to mountains and the sea for stunning views – Tainan has it all!

Sunrise Watching & Scenic Views

Tainan’s New Year’s Eve trilogy includes bidding farewell to 2016 with a white sunset at the Wapan Salt Fields in Jingzijiao, Beimen, the New Year’s Eve party in front of the Tainan High-Speed Rail Station, and greeting the 2017 sunrise at Er Liao along with a hiking event at Huzihpi Reservoir. Among these, Er Liao in Zhengan is not only the spot in Taiwan with the lowest altitude where you can watch the sunrise and sea of clouds, but the barren, rugged, and expansive badland landscape of Zhengan’s Moon World is also awe-inspiring, making it a must-visit popular attraction in Tainan.

The New Year’s Day hiking activity at Huzihpi Reservoir offers free entry before 10 AM, allowing you to greet the new year with beautiful scenery. In addition, at Wushantou Reservoir, families can take a solar-powered boat tour to admire the reservoir’s vistas, which is both educational and fun.

Rural Countryside Vibes

Tainan’s newest bus tour route – the Greater Tainan Yellow Route 9 – not only takes you to national-level attractions like the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, but also showcases a variety of charming rural scenery along the way.

The Houpi Jingliao “No Rice, No Problem” Community exudes a leisurely and idyllic countryside charm. Here, you can savor traditional farmer-style rice harvest meals, wander through the heritage shops along Jingliao Old Street, and feel truly happy. Additionally, in January 2017, the “Elegant Farmer Art Farm” will complete a major renovation and reopen. By then, visitors will be able to stroll through rural art landscapes, listen to local stories, experience rural life and art, which is something to really look forward to.

Soak in Hot Springs to Warm the Body and Soul

In winter, hot spring soaking is a must. Head to the Guanziling Hot Spring Scenic Area in Tainan to explore the area’s historical footprints, stroll along the hot spring old street, and then find a hot spring to soak in, enjoying the warm “heartfelt” cleansing of the mud hot spring water to soothe your fatigue. After your soak, you can enjoy a delicious meal of claypot chicken, and then visit the nearby 175 Dongshan Coffee Avenue to taste the rich and aromatic Dongshan coffee, taking the experience to the next level.
