Rediscover the original touch of emotion at the 2010 Hengchun Folk Music Festival

The folk songs of Hengchun have been passed down for years, expressing the most authentic side of local life. For instance, the catchy “Si Xiang Qi” (Thoughts Arise) can deliver a simple yet touching sentiment, becoming one of the most nostalgic melodies in the hearts of Taiwanese people. The Hengchun Folk Music Festival has now entered its third year. This year’s theme is “Wind and Tide – The Voice of the Mountains,” showcasing the diversity of music in Pingtung. From August 21 to August 29, various performance groups will deliver captivating shows, allowing the public to feel the emotion within folk music.

The “2010 Hengchun International Folk Music Festival” is part of the Council for Cultural Affairs’ “2010 Formosa Arts and Culture Festival Series.” A total of seven counties and cities across Taiwan are hosting cultural arts festivals. In addition to local performances, six overseas groups have been invited to perform in Taiwan, using the appreciation of diverse musical styles to promote international cultural exchange.

Participating singers include “national treasure” level master Zhu Dingshun, teacher Jian Shangren, Nanwang Sisters, Chen Jian-nian, and Showlen Maya, who will sing their beautiful voices in locations such as Pingtung City and the Hengchun Peninsula. In addition to performances, those interested in folk music can also join activities such as the Hengchun Folk Music Creation Camp and the Hengchun Folk Music Museum exhibition to gain a deeper understanding of the charm of the folk music world and help promote Taiwan’s local music.
