Parent-child activity: Little Duck Guessing Game at the Taipei International Birdwatching Fair
The “Little Duck Guessing Game” has been held for three consecutive years. Participants record the arrival dates and numbers of little ducks in Guandu to observe how environmental and climatic factors affect their migration. By going online to predict their arrival date and the maximum number of little ducks in Guandu Nature Park by the end of October this year, you could win birdwatching T-shirts, nature books, and more.

In various water bodies across Taiwan, you can often see a group of birds with flat beaks and waddling gaits—they all belong to the Anatidae family. There are 14 genera and 41 species in Taiwan, most of which are migratory or wintering birds, such as mallards, garganey, northern pintails, and northern shovelers. The little duck is smaller than other Anatidae species. Every summer and autumn, they fly south from Siberia at high latitudes and return to Siberia the following spring. As they often float on the water to rest, people in Taiwan commonly call them “water ducklings” (a local colloquial term).
The activity is conducted entirely through online predictions. Both adults and children can participate online before October 31 and have the chance to visit Guandu Nature Park, observe the ecological environment up close, and contribute to conservation efforts.
