Love the Earth with a Low-Carbon Lifestyle: The Greater Taipei International Car-Free Day Kicks Off

The “Greater Taipei International Car-Free Day,” which has been held for nine consecutive years, kicked off again on August 16. This year’s “2010 Greater Taipei International Car-Free Day” is themed “No Car, More Fun” by the Taipei City Government, calling on citizens to join the “One Day Without a Car Each Week” campaign. The event has also enlisted internationally renowned environmental musician Matthew Lien, who recently became a “father to the people of Taiwan,” as its spokesperson. He shared his experience using the EasyCard and living an energy-saving and low-carbon lifestyle. The event runs from August 16 to September 30, and the Taipei City Government has also prepared various lucky draw promotions in hopes of encouraging enthusiastic public participation.

The series of activities for Car-Free Day include themes such as “Gamers Explore and Win Big Prizes,” “Search for the Uncle of Taipei’s Happy Bus,” “5284 Battle,” and “Sign Up for No-Car Recognition to Get Benefits,” as well as a large-scale “Summer Themed Party” to be held at the Water Park on September 18.

Among them, the “5284 Battle” aims to promote the convenience of public transportation in Taipei City. Utilizing the 5284 bus dynamic inquiry system, a competition will be held. The organizers will select five participants from the applicants to take part in the recording of the “5284 Battle” event program, and a professional and experienced TV program director will be invited to serve as the judge.

As for Taipei County, in response to this year’s international Car-Free Day slogan “Travel Smarter, Live Better,” the theme for the 2010 Greater Taipei International Car-Free Day is “Explore New Taipei City: A Low-Carbon Light Life.” On September 18, the Bannan Expressway section from Banqiao to Bali will once again be opened to all cycling enthusiasts. The event will also feature appearances by spokespeople Lung Hung-chi and Angela Chang, along with performances including extreme BMX biking and magic shows. The public can also participate in on-site quizzes and lucky draws.
