Handpicked authenticity, an in-depth experience of local Korean culture
For the Korean people, autumn is one of the most important seasons of the year, a wonderful time when the entire nation prepares to reap the fruits of hard work. For visitors from abroad, this year coincides with two major events: the "30th Gimje Ginseng Festival" and the "2010 Yangyang Matsutake Festival," making it the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Korean culture and its people.
Gimje is the 1,500-year-old birthplace of Korean ginseng. The 30th Gimje Ginseng Festival held here has been selected by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as one of the nation’s top festivals. Travelers from around the world can participate in a variety of ginseng-related experiences and gain a wealth of knowledge about ginseng’s health benefits.
This year’s Gimje Ginseng Festival runs from September 3 to September 12. It kicks off with the “Ginseng Opening Ceremony,” and visitors absolutely shouldn’t miss the chance to try ginseng picking. You can also purchase the ginseng you pick as a souvenir.

Another key autumn event is the “2010 Yangyang Matsutake Festival” held in Gangwon Province. Taking place from September 24 to September 28, visitors can celebrate the bountiful harvest of premium matsutake mushrooms grown in the pristine natural environment of the Taebaek Mountain Range. They can explore the clean ecosystem where matsutake grow and even pick the precious mushrooms themselves. Yangyang matsutake are known for their thick flesh, rich flavor, lower moisture content compared to other regions, firm texture, and long shelf life, earning them titles such as “golden mushrooms,” “diamonds of the forest,” and “mysterious treasures.” This year’s event also offers additional experiences like catching sweetfish, gathering chestnuts in the matsutake forest, picking pears in Naksan, and making Songchon rice cakes.
