The 2010 Historic Sites Opening Event Kicks Off on September 18

Historic sites with an old-world charm often serve as a microcosm of a city's history and the essence of its culture. On September 18 and 19 this year, it’s National Heritage Day—a rare opportunity to visit historic landmarks. This year’s Heritage Day features special openings of usually off-limits sites such as the Control Yuan, the Executive Yuan, and the Taipei Guest House, as well as normally closed venues including the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation Building, the Governor-General’s Office Mountain Forestry Section Dormitory, Dadaocheng Church, Zhongshan Presbyterian Church, and Jinan Church.

The Shilin Official Residence is located at the southeast corner of the intersection of Section 5, Zhongshan North Road, and Fulin Road. It was originally part of the Horticulture Management Office (formerly the Shilin Horticultural Experimental Substation), and in 1950, it became the official residence of the late President Chiang Kai-shek.

Additionally, some venues that usually require an admission fee will also be open to the public, including the Li Kuo-ting Former Residence, the Taipei Water Department Park, the National Taiwan Museum, the former Yokohama Specie Bank Building, and the Beitou Cultural Artifacts Museum. These sites will offer free or discounted entry on Heritage Day, and some historic locations will even prepare souvenirs for visitors.

To date, Taipei City has designated over 300 historic sites, historical buildings, cultural landscapes, and heritage sites. However, countless tangible and intangible cultural assets still exist around us. This year, the Taipei Heritage Day series of events will start with the concept of preservation, using cultural asset courses, guided tours during Heritage Day, and the “City Patrol Cat” certification program for those who protect Taipei. These initiatives make it easier to learn about urban preservation through the convenience of the internet.

The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is also participating in the open heritage event and hosting the special exhibition 【Magic Hats Talking】—The World of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales. The first 150 visitors to the Andersen exhibition will receive a souvenir.
