Old buildings get a new look, bringing back the Victorian charm of Shanghai’s Bund
The landmark building on Shanghai’s Bund—the former Shanghai Club Building—was constructed during the Victorian era. After years of neglect, it has been restored to its former glory by internationally acclaimed interior design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) and reopened as the luxury Waldorf Astoria hotel.
This historic building is located at No. 2 The Bund and was once Shanghai’s most prestigious social venue, featuring a bowling alley, restaurants, a hair salon, and a wine cellar. Its 35-meter-long Long Bar was once the longest in the world. It later served as offices, a casino, a movie filming location, and a fast-food restaurant. Now, after extensive redevelopment, it has become the first Waldorf Astoria hotel in Asia opened by Hilton Worldwide.
HBA is one of the world’s leading experts in the restoration of historic buildings, having transformed some of the oldest and most prestigious hotels globally while preserving their original elements and character. The refurbished Waldorf Astoria boasts whitewashed façades, silver-white palladium columns, pediments, and two exquisitely carved domed pavilions, making it one of the finest architectural gems along Shanghai’s waterfront promenade. The hotel features 266 guest rooms, four restaurants, two bars, a patisserie, a lobby lounge, banquet spaces and facilities, a swimming pool, a health center, and a spa. The building’s interior Grand Ballroom preserves the original solid wood wainscoting, yellowish-gray plaster walls, intricate ceilings, and wall decorations. Guests can also bask in the soft glow of antique crystal chandeliers, showcasing the delicate elegance of the past.
