The 1050th Anniversary of Mazu’s Birth: Changhua’s Mazu Pilgrimage Blessing Carnival
The Mazu pilgrimage blessing has always been a major event in Changhua. This year, the Nanyao Temple in Changhua City serves as the leading temple, officially setting off on October 3rd for an 8-day pilgrimage that will pass through 14 townships and cities. In addition to the pilgrimage, the Changhua City Government has specially invited the internationally renowned group “U-Theatre” to perform at “Cloud Walk” events in Changhua, with spectacular nightly shows in front of the temples where Mazu stops, allowing the public to experience the powerful impact of live drumming.
The Mazu pilgrimage is a major event across Taiwan, and this year’s celebration has been expanded.
As 2010 marks the 1050th anniversary of Mazu’s birth, a special “Light of Mazu” evening gala was held on August 2nd (Saturday), the eve of the pilgrimage blessing activities, featuring performances by groups from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and well-known entertainers. The temple fair, running from October 1st to October 9th, combines religion, culture, art, academia, folklore, and local traditions. While recreating the temple fair atmosphere, it also offers fun activities for the public, including glove puppetry, Taiwanese opera, cup-throwing games, artist meet-and-greets, photography exhibitions, and academic seminars on Mazu, among other cultural and artistic performances. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy Changhua.
U-Theatre is an internationally renowned group and will be participating in the pilgrimage this year.
In addition, those who cannot attend the pilgrimage in person have another unique way to participate. U-Theatre has specially collaborated with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to launch the “Bicycle Fleet Management System” service. Users can monitor the Cloud Walk team’s route on Google Maps from home or via mobile internet, using GPS tracking to enjoy a sense of being there in person.
