Green Island boasts breathtaking scenery, attracting not only domestic tourists but also being a must-visit destination for international divers. However, popular tourist spots can often conceal many environmental risks that threaten ecological conservation and gradually deplete tourism resources. As a result, governments around the world have been collaborating with businesses to promote environmental protection efforts. The Taitung County Government has also launched the “Protect Green Island · Get Close to the Ocean · Conservation Travel” campaign, aiming to make Green Island a flagship for Taiwan’s international tourism.

In 2008, Green Island was selected as one of the world’s top 101 best diving spots, making it Taiwan’s only world-class diving destination. This summer, the number of daily visitors to the island approached 5,000, hitting a record high. However, what most people don’t know is that due to the increase in tourist numbers, the volume of marine wastewater has risen, leading to noticeable coral bleaching and death in Green Island’s waters. Additionally, the prevalent practices of motorbiking around the island and some tourists consuming reef fish have caused significant harm to Green Island.

In line with sustainable development, the Taitung County Government has successively introduced eco-tourism experiences on Green Island, including invasive species removal, lily restoration, and garbage recycling through beach and sea clean-ups. These activities aim to engage businesses in energy-saving and carbon-reduction initiatives. The domestic hot spring enterprise Julong Resort Group has utilized hot spring resource recycling technology to share renewable energy and energy-saving achievements with Green Island residents, while its employees have immersed themselves in local life on the island to implement conservation travel activities. The group hopes to inspire more businesses to participate.

Conservation travel is a customized itinerary that can be tailored to the expectations of different enterprises. Beyond contributing their expertise to Green Island, these trips also incorporate educational elements through work-and-holiday models, blending work with leisure. Activities include: mountain exploration and interpretation experiences, invasive species removal, and casual mountain clean-ups; enjoying sunsets on the beach while cleaning coastal waste. In the evening, participants create DIY projects with plastic bottles and paint inflatable buoys, which are then displayed at homestays or villages the next day to share traditional Green Island lifestyles and culture, leaving an unforgettable impression of the trip.
