International Coastal Cleanup Day sees Phuket resort responding to environmental conservation
“International Coastal Cleanup Day” is a global event supported by government agencies worldwide. Phuket’s Indigo Pearl resort has taken the lead in conserving coastal ecology by cleaning Nai Yang Beach and launching an “eco-tourism” initiative. This invites guests to give back to the environment while enjoying a relaxing holiday.
Every September, over 500,000 people from 100 countries join forces to remove millions of pounds of trash accumulated on beaches and waterways worldwide. This year marks Phuket’s first participation in the event, organized by Indigo Pearl in partnership with the international environmental group Sustainable Smiles, with support from local government.
The seven-mile-long beach was divided into six zones, where volunteers worked in teams of four to clean up waste and record data. Using data cards, volunteers documented marine debris information, which was then handed over to the Ocean Conservancy for analysis and compilation. The organization produces a report for each country detailing the types and quantities of marine waste. These reports highlight the impact of marine debris on wildlife and its connection to global climate change.
The day’s collection filled over 105 garbage bags, weighing a total of 1,250 kilograms. Additionally, a small exhibition organized by local students featured unique displays, including artworks made from 2,000 “nurdles” (tiny plastic pellets used in manufacturing), showcasing the negative effects of these small plastic particles on local waters. As part of its environmental awareness campaign, Indigo Pearl also launched an “eco-tourism” accommodation package priced at 21,900 Thai baht. Guests can stay in a Pearl Bed suite and enjoy complimentary extras, such as a two-person à la carte dinner and cocktails at any Indigo Pearl restaurant, a one-hour couple’s foot massage at the IN-DI-GO Spa, a half-price in-room spa milk bath, and participation in an eco-guided tour.
