Over time, Kakunodate has not only become one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in the Tohoku region but also features a 2-kilometer-long “cherry blossom tunnel” formed by the weeping cherry and other cherry trees lining the banks of the Hinokinai River near the Bukeyashiki area. This tunnel is the main highlight of spring flower viewing in Kakunodate. The main varieties include weeping cherries and Somei Yoshino cherries.
The town of Kakunodate is divided into the bukeyashiki (samurai district, or inner town) and the merchants' district (outer town) by Hibuse Square. The former centers around Otemachi Bukeyashiki Street, where centuries-old samurai residences—many designated as historic sites—line the street, creating the strongest impression of Kakunodate as “Little Kyoto.” The latter centers around Shimonakamachi and is home to many wealthy families who made their fortunes in sake brewing, fermentation, and pickled foods.
The Hinokinai River, which flows through the center of Kakunodate, has banks lined primarily with Somei Yoshino cherry trees, forming a 2-kilometer-long cherry blossom tunnel. The densest section runs from Furugajo Bridge to Uchikawa Bridge. Standing on the red Yokomachi Bridge and looking upstream offers a particularly impressive view of the grandeur of the tunnel. This sight often symbolizes the Tohoku region’s farewell to deep winter and heavy snow. Tourists flock here from all over to enjoy the spring blossoms, making Kakunodate Station bustling and lively.
