As the centennial of the founding of the Republic of China approaches, the "Centennial of the Republic of China New Year's Eve Celebration," jointly organized by the Centennial Celebration Preparatory Committee of the Republic of China, the Council for Cultural Affairs of the Executive Yuan, and the Taipei City Government, will be held at 10:40 PM on December 31st at the Dajia Riverside Park Eco Theater, with only slightly more than 8,000 tickets available. In addition to invited dignitaries, the event will also include representatives from disadvantaged groups and volunteers from various counties and cities. Dajia Riverside Park of the Taipei Expo will also be closed for one day on December 31st. For those unable to attend in person, don’t be disappointed—you can enjoy the 200-million-Taiwan-dollar fireworks and spectacular water screen performances from the comfort of your home via television.

This grand New Year’s celebration is overseen by choreographer Lin Hwai-min as the chief advisor, with renowned Asian theater designer Lin Kehua serving as the artistic director. The event also invites well-known domestic and international artists to participate, including Chinese-American artist Cai Guo-Qiang, artist Ma Wen, Taiwanese young theater director Wang Jiaming, and Hong Kong lighting designer Chang Kuo-yung, forming a five-person creative team. The three executive directors are Liu Ruo-yu of U-Theatre, rising choreographer Cheng Tsung-lung, and celebrated traditional opera director Liu Kuang-tung. Nearly 1,000 performers from music, dance, digital media, and amateur participants collaborate both onstage and off.

The evening venue takes advantage of the natural topography of the Dajia Eco Theater, extending from the Grand Hotel Taipei and the Dazhi Bridge to the banks of the Keelung River, using the water and sky as a screen to create the largest landscape and waterscape performance in Taiwan’s history. The water screens and fireworks are highlights beyond the performance itself. There are two water screens: one is a 60-meter-wide and 20-meter-high adjustable screen, while the other, located on the Keelung River, spans 200 meters in width and 20 meters in height. Emmy Award-winning director and Athens Olympics opening and closing ceremony director Gregory Breakell personally leads the production. From the Grand Hotel Taipei to the stage area, 26 high-definition cameras will capture the beautiful scenes throughout the night.

The entire evening performance is divided into four acts, utilizing a wealth of Taiwanese cultural elements to tell the story of the people and the land from the past, present, and future, reflecting on the relationship between humans, the land, and nature. Through the integration of technology and art, many scenes are poetic and picturesque—sometimes dreamlike, sometimes majestic. Notably, the massive gong of U-Theatre emerges like the rising sun, breaking through the water amid swirling clouds, accompanied by the solemn chanting of the Tsou tribe’s spirit-offering song, which is deeply moving.
