Film enthusiasts are surely familiar with Alfred Hitchcock (1899–1980), and iconic screen stars—like historical landmarks—also hold great significance in history. From January 5 to February 28, 2011, the French Cinematheque in Paris hosted a retrospective of Hitchcock’s works, offering a glimpse into the enigmatic world of the master filmmaker. Meanwhile, the “Landmarks: Stars of Cinema” exhibition transformed the Conciergerie (Paris’s former prison) into a film set, showcasing movie props, costumes, photographs, and clips. The exhibition ran until February 13, 2011.

Hitchcock is renowned for pioneering the camera’s ability to unveil hidden details and is considered one of the most iconic figures in the seventh art. This retrospective features film screenings and lectures, highlighting three key phases of his illustrious career: his early years in Britain, his development in the United States, and his mature period. It offers a comprehensive revisit to the master of suspense’s extraordinary lens techniques. (Ticket price: €5–6.5)
French landmarks—castles, cathedrals, and architectural wonders from various eras—have been stars on the silver screen since the dawn of cinema. Whether as “natural backdrops” or sets recreated in studios, they have shared the spotlight with the most famous actors on movie posters. Masterpieces of French architectural heritage have inspired filmmakers, from Georges Méliès to Walt Disney, from Éric Rohmer to Sofia Coppola.

The “Landmarks: Stars of Cinema” exhibition is the first tribute to these architectural masterpieces, presented in collaboration with the film archives of Gaumont and Pathé.
