India is a deeply religious country, with numerous festivals taking place throughout the year. The Maheshwar region is one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus, featuring dozens of temples along the banks of the holy Narmada River. Every February, the “Holy Water Festival” is held here, with three days of celebrations including vibrant music and dance performances that bring the city to life.

The 2011 Indian Holy Water Festival was held from February 18th to 20th. During these three evenings, classical Indian music and traditional cultural performances were presented. Thousands of oil lamps were lit at the venue, creating a spectacular scene along the river. The Ahilya Fort Hotel in India also launched special festival activities, inviting guests to join the celebrations in Maheshwar. Visitors could enjoy the festivities in front of temples, on riverboats, and inside a centuries-old fort. The hotel also offered guided music and dance demonstrations to provide deeper insights into traditional Indian culture.

The Ahilya Fort hotel belongs to the Relais & Chateaux group and is owned by Indian prince Richard Holkar, who was also one of the initiators of the 2000 Holy Water Festival. As such, the hotel reserves the best viewing spots during the festival each year, offering guests more opportunities to interact with local musicians and dancers—truly a rare and memorable experience.
