After days of staying indoors during the Spring Festival holiday, why not step out with your family? While enjoying festive meals, take a stroll along the old streets to experience Taiwan’s unique historic charm. The Council of Agriculture’s February feature, “Rural Nostalgic Flavors,” recommends rural old streets across Taiwan, inviting people to embrace cultural heritage and scenic countryside landscapes during the New Year celebrations and joyfully welcome the Year of the Rabbit!

Where are the best spots in Taiwan for festive outings and blessings? At the ancestral temple on Sanxia Old Street, the sixth day of the Lunar New Year marks the birthday of the Deity Qingshui Zushi, and the temple holds a competition featuring decorated pigs, accompanied by lively performances of suona horns and gongs and drums. Visitors can then head to the nearby Xiongkong Organic Eco-Tea Garden to enjoy the blossoms, stroll the trails, and savor mellow oolong tea. Or, amid the vibrant atmosphere of Tamsui Old Street, after indulging in local delicacies, pay a visit to the Wuji Tianyuan Temple in the Hobe Leisure Agriculture Area of Tamsui District, New Taipei City, to pray for blessings while admiring early spring cherry blossoms and camellias. Additionally, the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival will kick off around the Lantern Festival—you can explore historic Japanese-era architecture during the day and marvel at the spectacular lanterns lighting up the night sky.

In the “Rural Nostalgic Flavors” feature, you’ll find a collection of unique ways to explore nearby attractions on an old street tour—covering 81 scenic spots, 21 travel routes, and 39 old street highlights. Wander through old alleyways, venture into pastoral fields and mountain forests, enjoy flowers and birds, go for leisurely rides, and seek peace and happiness at historic sites and temples.
