May is peak season for cruise travel in the Northern Hemisphere. With so many options, how do you choose? The tonnage of a ship doesn’t equate to its class—many mid- to small-sized ships are still five-star. For example, ships on typical East Asian routes are smaller not because the routes are “closer,” but due to shallow ports that can’t accommodate larger vessels. Consumers looking to book a cruise should compare services, space, dining standards, facilities, and more. Ideally, prices should allow you to purchase “shore excursions” separately for greater flexibility.

The “Costa Cruises” Western Mediterranean itinerary departs from Taipei, with a transfer in Rome, visiting Italy, Spain, Monaco, and Sicily in the Western Mediterranean. Additionally, three other top-tier six-star cruises are offered: Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and Silversea Cruises. Most cabins are spacious ocean-view suites, with almost no interior cabins, and the onboard space is more generous. The “service ratio” can even reach 1:1.5 (one staff member for every 1.5 guests).
