Hualien One-Day Tour (VI): From Leisure Farms to Paragliding Bases :: Fenglin & Wanrong

Mastered by professors from National Taipei University of Education using professional bamboo charcoal manufacturing techniques, the workshop produces various bamboo charcoal products using 4 to 5-year-old Moso bamboo. Visitors can learn about the detailed production process, understand the principles of high-temperature carbonization, enjoy delicious bamboo charcoal ice cream, and purchase exquisitely handmade bamboo charcoal pottery.

During the Japanese colonial period, tobacco barns were used for curing tobacco leaves and storage, serving as a major economic source for the Hakka people in Hualien and Taitung. Fenglin’s tobacco barns are the most densely concentrated and best preserved in Taiwan, mainly categorized into Hiroshima-style and Osaka-style. Some feature red brick walls and black roofs, while others are entirely black-toned, with elegant and distinctive designs.

Hakka people make up over 65% of Fenglin’s population. The Hakka Cultural Museum primarily showcases the migration history of the Eastern Hakka community, along with traditional Hakka homes, architecture, and utensils. The first floor introduces records of Hakka land reclamation in Hualien and daily life tools, while the second floor covers the historical development of traditional Hakka clothing, household facilities, and industry.

Originally the principal’s residence of Fenglin Junior High School, the Principals’ Dream Factory earned Fenglin the nickname “Hometown of Principals” due to the remarkably high number—86 in total—of principals from the town across Taiwan. In 2004 (the 93rd year of the Republic of China), the residence was renovated and renamed to document the dream-chasing journey of Fenglin in nurturing numerous outstanding figures in education.

Established by the Hualien Paragliding Association, the Mingli Paragliding Base is an excellent paragliding site in the Huatung Valley, spanning the airspace of Wanrong, Fenglin, and Guangfu. To the north, it extends off-road to Zhaofeng, Dong Hwa University, Ji’an, and Xiulin, while to the south it reaches Ruisui and Yuli. It regularly hosts paragliding events and competitions, making it a great spot to experience paragliding.
