The year 2017 had just begun when many new restaurants opened, one that caught my interest was this specialty french fry shop from Tokyo called “AND THE FRIET.” As someone who loves french fries, I immediately added it to my list when I heard about it. By coincidence, I was out shopping with a friend nearby, and as we walked, I suddenly got hungry—so we spontaneously decided to come here for fries! I love the refreshing vibe of the little shop, and the french fries come in such nicely packaged, premium-looking containers. The flavors were great too.

AND THE FRIET is a japanese specialty french fry shop. It currently has three branches in Japan, five in Korea, and its first Taiwan branch is located behind Zhongxiao Dunhua and Mingyao Department Store.

The store is painted in a blue shade that I really like, complementing the white walls perfectly. Although it gets quite crowded, it doesn’t diminish its fresh and clean atmosphere. The overall vibe of the shop didn’t feel very Japanese to me—in fact, it felt more Korean—so at first glance, I actually thought it was a Korean brand. It wasn’t until I looked more closely that I realized it’s from Japan!

The entire shop is designed in a simple, clean white style, while the illustrations on the french fry packaging and merchandise were created by Japanese designer “Naomi Hirabayashi.” I love this slightly realistic yet playful art style.

There are a few indoor seating spots where you can sit and enjoy your meal.

AND THE FRIET offers a variety of potato flavors based on different types and cuts of potatoes: Bintje (from Belgium), Pike (from Douliu), Purple Majesty (from Douliu), Crispy (from the U.S.), Curly (from the U.S.), and Champion Potato (from Changhua).
The most unique one is the Champion Potato from Changhua, made using locally grown Taiwanese No. 57 Golden Potatoes. Unfortunately, they were sold out on the day I visited, so I’ll have to try them next time!

That day, my friend and I ordered a bouquet-style fries, a box of fries, and a glass of citrus ginger soda. We got to try two different types of potatoes: Bintje (from Belgium, straight-cut) and Curly (from the U.S., spiral-cut).

Boxed Fries (two types of fries + two sauces) – NT$220
The boxed fries are perfect for sharing with friends. I really like the packaging—the cardboard is thick, and the illustrations add an extra touch of quality. Inside the box, we had Bintje (Belgium, straight-cut) and Curly (U.S., spiral-cut) fries. Both flavors were delicious, though I personally preferred the spiral-cut Curly fries. For dipping sauces, we chose Cheese Symphony and Silky Mentaiko. The Cheese Symphony had a rich, fragrant cheese taste that paired really well with the fries, but the Mentaiko sauce I found a bit salty and greasy. The fries were crispy and crunchy, and the spiral-cut ones had an even crispier texture. Overall, it was pretty tasty, but for the price, the portion size was a bit small.

Bouquet Fries (one type of fries + one sauce) – NT$160
The fries are wrapped like a bouquet, and I love this design—it’s adorable and perfect for enjoying on your own. This serving also uses straight-cut Belgian potatoes, but it comes with sweet basil pesto. Out of the three sauces I tried that day, the pesto was my favorite—aromatic without being heavy. There’s also a side of fried pickles included, which can help cut through the richness, but I’m not a fan of pickles so I didn’t try them. (My friend said they were quite sour.)

The dining tables even have little spots designed to hold the bouquet fries—super cute!

Citrus Ginger Soda – NT$120 (get NT$50 off when ordering fries with a drink)
I really liked this soda—the combination of ginger and citrus is well-balanced. It has a sweet taste with a zesty kick from the ginger, but it never feels overpowering. Overall, it’s refreshing and helps cut through the richness.

I love this cute little french fry specialty shop. Though the prices are a bit high, it’s perfect for a casual stop with friends when you’re out shopping and craving a snack. It’s satisfying and a lot of fun!
