Many people list “hiking” as one of their must-do New Year’s activities,The “Emperor’s Terrace,” one of the three major rock climbing areas in northern Taiwan, is located in Shiding District, New Taipei City. Although its highest elevation is only 593 meters, the terrain is extremely steep, with many near-vertical cliffs that require using both hands and feet, as well as ropes, to complete the challenge. Walking along the ridgeline is the most unique feature of the “Emperor’s Terrace.”Coupled with convenient transportation, it has attracted many travelers.
Most hikers opt for an O-shaped route, entering from the West Peak trailhead, paying respects at the Tianwang Temple, and then finally conquering East Peak. The 2-kilometer ridgeline in between is almost entirely made up of massive rocks. In the early days, before safety ropes were installed, many adventurous hikers took on the challenge. Now, with the addition of iron chains, ropes, and granite-paved paths, safety has improved, but it remains a quite thrilling hiking route.

The most challenging part is the ascent to the summit, where you’ll face multiple near-vertical rock faces with only a single chain for support—you’ll have to scale the cliffs “like Spider-Man.” There are also three nearly vertical ladder sections, each longer and steeper than the last. Without strong arms and a bold heart, you might consider turning back halfway. The faint of heart should think twice before attempting this.

Upon reaching the summit and walking along the ridgeline, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding peaks. The Datun Mountain Range, Guanyin Mountain Range, Tamsui River, and the entire Greater Taipei area all lie beneath your feet, giving the sensation of standing atop a peak thousands of meters high. This has inspired netizens to take photos and check in to commemorate this moving moment. Many have commented, “This really feels like proper mountain climbing” and “My legs will be sore for days afterward.”
