While the world is busy building skyscrapers, the “Shimao Quarry InterContinental Hotel” located in the Shanghai Songjiang National Scenic Area is doing just the opposite — creating the world’s lowest-elevation five-star hotel. It is the first-ever building constructed in an 80-meter-deep giant pit, with architecture that appears to be suspended on a cliff, giving off a strong futuristic vibe.

The Quarry InterContinental Hotel is the first-ever building constructed in an 80-meter-deep giant pit

The Shimao Quarry InterContinental Hotel has undergone years of construction. The giant pit where the hotel is situated was once an abandoned quarry. Due to its steep and unique terrain, the construction presented unprecedented technical challenges. Even the installation of equipment had to be done in reverse. The project has now been completed and is set to begin trial operations at the end of May.

The hotel has over 300 rooms, with two floors above ground, 16 underground, and two underwater. Its structure conforms to the curved shape of the giant pit, and all rooms are C-shaped to minimize environmental impact.

The hotel is divided into sections inside and outside the pit, including a natural landscape waterfall and indoor gardens
