Traditional culture experience at Kumamoto’s “Sakura no Baba – Shiroisan”

Learning history can be fun too！Located right next to Kumamoto Castle, “Sakura no Baba – Shiroisan” is an experience park that opened just this March. It brings the history of Kumamoto Castle to life through dynamic displays, allowing visitors to learn in a fun and engaging way through hands-on activities. It’s quite entertaining, so next time you visit Kumamoto Castle to admire its magnificent ruins, don’t forget to stop by Shiroisan as well!

The buildings “Yuyuza” and “Sakura no Koji” at Shiroisan (you can drag the mouse to change the view)

Shiroisan is divided into two main sections: “Yuyuza” and “Sakura no Koji.” “Yuyuza” is a two-story building that uses projections, 3D models, and theatrical performances to depict the era of Kato Kiyomasa. Visitors can also try on traditional costumes for free, ride in a palanquin, or pose for photos on horseback, making for a highly enjoyable experience.

The “Sakura no Koji” shopping street is located right outside “Yuyuza.” It’s essentially a commercial area selling handicrafts and local street food, with the exterior designed based on the streetscape of a castle town from the Edo period. The area recreates old-fashioned shops, and many visitors can be seen holding rich, creamy ice cream while strolling through the shops and snacking on korokke, giving the historical park a refreshing and less rigid atmosphere.
