A Century-Old Imperial Favorite Hotel—Kagaya

A century-old hotel in Japan that has ranked first in the “Experts’ Choice: Top 100 Japanese Hotels & Ryokans” for 30 consecutive years has opened its first overseas branch in Beitou, built adjacent to Taiwan’s first hot spring inn, “Tengu-an.”

The exterior features traditional Japanese sukiya-style architecture, while the interior is open from the first to the sixteenth floor—taller and more spectacular than the six-story atrium of the Kagaya in Wajima. Most internal partitions are not fully enclosed, preserving a smooth and open space that feels spacious and comfortable. From the transparent elevators, you can enjoy uninterrupted views. On the second-floor lobby or the third-floor atrium, full wooden beams are intentionally charred into arches, and the glass or atrium wallpaper mimics washi paper. Traditional crafts from the Noto Peninsula, such as Kaga gold leaf, Kaga yuzen, Kutani ware, and Wajima lacquerware, are used lavishly throughout. For example, like the Kagaya in Wajima, the lobby also displays “Dance of the Celestial Maiden” by Japan’s top lacquer artist, Saburo Kakufuku. The exteriors of the three elevators may appear opaque in Kaga yuzen patterns, but inside, they feature Kagaya gold leaf full moons, as well as waxing and waning crescents—the attention to detail makes Kagaya in Beitou an elegant and uniquely charming hotel.

The public baths on the 4th floor operate on a daily gender-switching system. The “Moonview” bath includes an oven, and the “Distant Mountains” bath features a steam room, both allowing guests to enjoy Beitou’s unique sulfur springs. One of the two main baths is made from Taiwanese hinoki cypress, chosen for its distinctive and refreshing fragrance. The 5th floor houses 17 tranquil and uniquely styled private bathing rooms, each with tubs themed around pottery, hinoki cypress, or natural terrazzo, offering diverse experiences. Additionally, the 5th floor is home to The SPA by Socie, part of Japan’s Shiseido beauty group, offering a variety of treatments to relax the body and mind and rejuvenate your energy.
