Relive Teresa Teng’s charm as Shouping Theater in Jiufen screens classic films

The news of "The Hat Queen" Teresa Teng’s passing due to cancer has left her fans worldwide in shock and deep sorrow. Beyond her exceptional singing talent, Teresa Teng also starred in several films during the 1980s. Shouping Theater in Jiufen will screen two classic Taiwanese films starring Teresa Teng — “That’s Her” and “Step by Step” — at 11 a.m. tomorrow (the 18th) and Sunday morning respectively. Admission is free, giving the public a chance to revisit the timeless elegance of the legendary diva.

Once the largest theater in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, Shouping Theater fell into disrepair on Jiufen’s old street after it closed in 1986. Following a redevelopment effort by New Taipei City Government, it reopened last September. Now functioning as a multifunctional cultural and artistic space, Shouping Theater hosts static nostalgic exhibits, glove puppetry, narrated stage shows, community art performances and lectures, along with screenings of classic films every Friday to Sunday afternoon.

To allow the public to reminisce about Teresa Teng’s acting performances, the originally scheduled weekend screenings of “Listening to the Wind ~ The Story of Jiufen” and “Dancing Rain ~ The Last Light of Jinguashi” have been postponed once. Both “That’s Her” and “Step by Step,” starring Teresa Teng and Kenny Bee, are directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien. “That’s Her” is a comedy about a rich girl and an engineer working on a rural road project who fall in love by chance, while “Step by Step” tells a romantic story involving a photography assistant, an advertising director, and a blind doctor.
