Chen Tianyang Sword Memorial Exhibition: Lee Teng-hui's Collection "Chengtian Sword" on Display

To commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of national crafts master Chen Tianyang, the Taichung Harbor Art Center is offering free admission to the "Sword Master of Lingnan – Chen Tianyang Sword Memorial Exhibition" from today until March 25. The exhibition features a variety of his sword works that won the National Crafts Award, as well as the first edition of the Hundred Longevity Sword created in 1995. This memorial exhibition displays 42 swords created by Chen Tianyang. Among them, the "Chengtian Sword" has a scabbard made of yew wood, with its mouth, guard rings, and pommel intricately carved with auspicious patterns representing fortune, prosperity, and longevity, as well as inscriptions reading "Commemorating the First Democratically Elected President of the Republic of China" and "Chengtian Sword." The "Jinghong Sword," jointly forged by Chen Tianyang and his third-generation successor Chen Zhongzhi, is the last sword he created and holds special significance. Additionally, the "Western Han Sword" was crafted based on an iron sword from the Western Han Dynasty unearthed in 1995 from the Shizhaishan ancient tomb complex in Yunnan, and this piece won the first Traditional Crafts Award, establishing his prestigious status in the field of sword-making.

Chen Tianyang, a native of Shalu District, Taichung, lived to the age of 72. He received the National Ethnic Crafts Award from the Council for Cultural Affairs (now the Ministry of Culture) multiple times and remains the only person in Taiwan to have won top three national awards in crafts for sword and blade art.
