Widely planting native Taiwanese plants — Free seeds giveaway at 6 high-speed rail stations

As spring begins and all things start to sprout, Taiwan High Speed Rail and the Jane Goodall Institute International have partnered to distribute seeds of native Taiwanese plants at six stations — Chiayi, Tainan, Zuoying on March 24 (Sat), and Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Taichung on March 25 (Sun). Members of the public can pick up the seeds for free at the event locations.

Native plants are those that grow naturally in a region without human transplantation or cultivation. After long periods of natural growth and evolution, they adapt to the local environment and climate, forming stable interdependent relationships with native wildlife. The six selected native plant species — Solanum erianthum, Thespesia populnea, Pittosporum pentandrum, Rhaphiolepis indica, and Glossy Privet — are common native trees in Taiwan and help maintain the ecological balance of the region.

On the day of the event, members of the “Roots & Shoots” youth groups from the Jane Goodall Institute will dress up as seeds or saplings to distribute seeds to passengers at the six high-speed rail stations, where activity booths will also be set up. Each seed packet will contain 5 to 10 seeds, with an estimated 1,000 packets to be given out at each station. Members of the public can take the seeds home to plant on their own.
