Stroll along the trails of Da Wu Island in Matsu, where sika deer walk alongside you

Located in Beigan Township, Matsu, Da Wu Island has seen its sika deer population grow to over a hundred since the 1970s through conservation efforts, making them the island’s new residents. Thanks to the “Weekend Da Wu Island Tour” launched in 2007, the deer have gradually become accustomed to human presence. For those seeking a serene “slow life” and “eco” journey, strolling along peaceful country trails alongside sika deer, Da Wu Island is the perfect destination.

Once home to residents and military personnel, Da Wu Island is now the only uninhabited island in Matsu open to visitors. The island’s figure-eight shaped loop trail offers breathtaking panoramic views, where sika deer can often be spotted. While some male deer roam alone, most travel in groups. When two herds meet, dozens of sika deer appear before your eyes—whether viewed from afar or up close, the sight is truly awe-inspiring.

Besides catching a rare glimpse of Taiwan’s sika deer herds, visitors to Da Wu Island can also observe crabs in the coastal intertidal zone, as well as over 20 other species including stick insects, pond frogs, Chinese skinks, doves, and Formosan harvest mice. In summer, the island’s bird-watching platform is also the best spot to see terns soaring against the sea and sky.
