The Meiling area in Tainan attracts 50,000 visitors for firefly watching, with Mother’s Day marking the final peak

Since the launch of the “2012 Tainan Meiling Firefly Watching Season” on April 21, nearly 50,000 people have visited the firefly-watching zone. The season runs until May 13, and interested visitors should make the most of the last weekend during Mother’s Day to witness the spectacular sight of swarms of fireflies glowing. Generally, visitors to Meiling can enjoy the fireflies near the Shuichuzai viewing spot, but due to this year’s unstable weather, the fireflies have been trending upwards and concentrating in the tea plantation areas.

Given that many parts of the tea plantation area are pristine forests and relatively remote, the tourism bureau is asking the public to cooperate with control measures—wrap flashlights in red cellophane, speak softly when entering the viewing area, and photographers using DSLR cameras are advised to preset their camera modes before entering to avoid affecting others’ firefly-watching experience. Currently, the firefly-watching season in Meiling offers clearer views of glowing fireflies located in the middle and treetops of wooded areas, such as Luciola terminalis, Luciola anceyi, Aquatica lateralis, and Aquatica substriata.

In Tainan this year, Xingnan Bus has coordinated with the firefly-watching event. On weekends, several special firefly-watching bus routes on Line 7606 to Nansi have extended service to the Meiling Tourist Service Center. The public is encouraged to take advantage of these services and choose suitable schedules. Upon arriving at the visitor center, visitors can transfer to the free shuttle bus that begins operating at 4 PM.
