Wild Japanese lilies bloom along the North Coast, turning Dharma Drum Mountain into a sea of flowers

The Taiwanese wild lilies of the North Coast begin to bloom in mid-April, stretching from Shimen’s Linsen Nose Coast all the way to Jinshan’s Shitoushan Park. Wild lilies can be seen blooming both solitarily and in clusters along the coastline. Early May is the peak blooming period, and around the Dharma Drum Mountain area, white lilies have formed a vast sea of blossoms.

The best spot to admire the flowers this year is the Dharma Drum Mountain area. Visitors are encouraged to go on weekends. They can park their cars at the parking lot at the foot of Dharma Drum Mountain and then walk up the mountain, or take the shuttle bus. The Dharma Drum Mountain trails offer views of blooming wild lilies everywhere. Li Yibin, a technical official at the Beiguangyuan (Wild Goose) Management Station of the North Coast & Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration, said that with the recent clear weather, the expansive lily fields at Dharma Drum Mountain are incredibly beautiful. The peak blooming period is now, and it is expected that the lily season will gradually wind down from mid-to-late May this year.

Ten years ago, the North Coast & Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration planted about 6,000 wild lilies on the hillside of Shimen’s Linsen Nose Coast. Venerable Shiguo from Dharma Drum Mountain also wanted to help with the lily restoration, so he started by collecting seeds from the restored Taiwanese wild lilies at Linsen Nose. Later, he gave back thousands of successfully cultivated bulbs to the North Coast & Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration to be planted in Jinshan’s Shitoushan Park. After nearly 10 years of restoration efforts, in recent years, the lilies have bloomed vigorously every April and May. There have even been cases where a single plant bloomed with as many as 30 flowers.
