In recent days, a two-legged race in Taiwan saw 602 participants break a Guinness World Record.

A delegation of approximately 600 people from the 39th JC Youth Ship "Tōkai-go (Tōkai Maru)", organized by the Tokai Regional Council of the Japan Junior Chamber International (JCI), successfully set a new Guinness World Record for a three-legged race at Guandshan Riverside Park in Taipei City today (June 5). The new record was achieved with 602 participants using 603 legs. To express their appreciation for the friendly ties between Taiwan and Japan, the Japanese side immediately presented the certificate of recognition to the Taipei City Government after receiving it.

Since 1974, the Tokai Regional Council of the Japan Junior Chamber International has organized a delegation every year to visit various parts of the world. This year, in gratitude for Taiwan’s assistance following the Great East Japan Earthquake last year, Taiwan was chosen as a stop on their journey, and they attempted to break a Guinness World Record at Guandshan Riverside Park on June 5.

The 602 participants included 474 Japanese youths and 128 Taiwanese youths. The 602 individuals tied red and blue bands around their legs respectively, and under the direction of flags and commands, moved to the rhythm of “red, blue, red, blue” to successfully complete the 50-meter course. The challenge took less than 20 minutes. Upon reaching the finish line and having the record officially confirmed by the adjudicator, everyone cheered loudly, high-fived each other, and celebrated together this historic moment.

The previous record for the "Most Participants in a Multi-Legged Race" was held by 324 participants from Kyoto Gakuen University in Japan on September 19, 2011. Spanish Guinness World Records adjudicator Carlos Martinez stated that this attempt with 602 participants forming a straight line over a width of 350 meters had to be completed without anyone falling and without interruption over a 50-meter distance. Coupled with the muddy conditions of the site, it was a highly challenging feat. He congratulated both China and Japan on jointly setting this record in Taipei City.
