While savoring zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival, did you know that the homeland of Penglai rice is Taipei, and Taipei’s rice food culture is centered in Daqiaotou? To help the public better understand the cultural history of Taiwan’s traditional rice foods and experience local rice food specialties, the Yan San Business District in Taipei’s Daqiaotou will hold the “Caopuzai/Sizai Traditional Rice Food Culture Festival” on June 17. The event will feature DIY zongzi wrapping experiences, free samples of rice foods, guidance from zongzi experts, and exhibitions on rice food culture. Registration is open from now until June 15, or until all slots are filled.

Chen Yinghui, chairperson of the Daqiaotou Yan San Business District and also the head of Daxi’s Guoshun Neighborhood, noted that Penglai rice is the mainstay of Taiwanese rice, originating from the old Higher Agricultural and Forestry School workshop within National Taiwan University’s College of Agriculture in 1925. The Daqiaotou Yan San Business District, adjacent to the Tamsui River with convenient irrigation access, was once a major rice-producing area. Historically known as “the land of abundant harvests” and “the land of fragrant rice,” it is the largest rice product wholesale and supply center in northern Taiwan. Therefore, “the roots of fragrant rice lie in Dadaocheng,” and the rice culture event has been held here for three years. Its aim is to let more people learn about the traditional and distinctive rice foods of the Yan San Business District in Daqiaotou, and to understand the local characteristics of Taipei’s rice food industry through hands-on experiences.

The Traditional Rice Food Festival will be held on June 17 next to the FamilyMart at No. 118, Section 3, Yanping North Road (next to the Holy Mother Temple at Lane 149 and Lane 172, Section 2, Dihua Street). From now on, pre-orders are also being accepted for northern-style meat zongzi, health zongzi, red turtle cakes, pyramid-shaped dumplings, coconut candies, sweet potato balls, peanut candies, mung bean rolls, and egg yolk pastries, all for just NT$15 each.
