Summer steam train tours on the Miaoli Old Mountain Line

The Miaoli Old Mountain Line summer tourist trains will run one round-trip CK124 steam sightseeing train every Friday and Saturday, and one round-trip diesel-electric sightseeing train every Sunday, with 300 seats per train. Starting July 2, tickets for all dates after July 13 will be available for reservation via Taiwan Railways’ telephone booking system or online. The steam sightseeing train has a single fare of NT$299, with no standing tickets available. Passengers holding a valid ticket or stub can visit the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum free of charge on the day of travel. The diesel-electric sightseeing train sells 300 seated and 100 standing tickets per trip, with full fares at NT$100 and concession fares at NT$50. Standing tickets or any remaining seats are available only on the day of travel at the Sanyi Station ticket window, with sales starting at 8:00 AM and ending at 10:30 AM. Booking information can be found on the Taiwan Railways Administration website at www.railway.gov.tw under the “Cruise-style Train” section.

The Miaoli Old Mountain Line railway has been listed by the Council for Cultural Affairs as one of Taiwan’s potential World Heritage sites. The summer tourist trains depart from Sanyi Station at 10:30 AM, making a approximately two-hour stop at Shengxing Station, the highest point on the Taiwan Railways network. Along the way, passengers will pass through seven tunnels and three railway bridges, taking in historic sites such as the ancient tunnel group, the Fishpondping Viaduct ruins, and the Liyutan Reservoir dam, before crossing the Da’an River to return via the old Tai’an Station in Taichung. The return trip arrives back at Sanyi Station at 2:30 PM.

In addition, from June 29 to July 1, free rides will be offered to charitable organizations, indigenous groups, local elementary and middle school students, or group travelers staying in Miaoli.
