The Phuket Surf Festival in Thailand competes on Patong Beach in August

Surfers have turned Patong Beach in Phuket into a paradise for the Thailand International Surf Festival (Quicksilver Thailand International Surf). Among Thailand’s tourist attractions, the southern island of Phuket has seen record-breaking visitor numbers. With flights between Phuket and Australia as well as nearby regions fully booked, the number of participants in events held on the island has also increased. The Phuket International Surf Festival will kick off with a bang on Patong Beach in August 2012.

Phuket enjoys calm seas for half the year, but when the southwest monsoon blows from May to October, it becomes a surfer’s paradise. Since 2002, Phuket has caught the attention of Asian surfers, marking the beginning of the growth of surfing on the island. With the help of Australian surfers, a surfing community was formed, followed by various competitions, club activities, and the establishment of safety regulations and improved lifeguard measures. Today, the annual Quicksilver Surf Competition is the most popular surfing event, and visitors are busy capturing stunning images of surfers riding the waves.

This year’s Quicksilver Surf Competition will take place from September 22 to 26 at Kata Bay, but surfers can still be seen enjoying the waves all over the popular northern part of Patong Bay. The organizers promise that the five-day surfing extravaganza at Kata Beach will include professional-level surfing competitions, beach music parties, and even fashion shows.
