The United Harvest Festival tribal celebration rocks Hualien

The Hualien County Indigenous United Harvest Festival is the highlight of the region’s annual cultural events. This year’s event will take place from July 6 to 8 in the large square directly opposite the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park. The festival incorporates a rich array of diverse tribal traditions such as mythology, rituals, and ceremonies. Highlights will include performances by well-known Indigenous bands, legendary ceremonies, the Worship of the War God MALATAW, a fixed-stage play featuring the Seediq legend of the Truku tribe, an Indigenous food street, and more.

The 2012 Harvest Festival activities include the Young & Vibrant Night from 5:30 PM to 9:50 PM on July 6, the Fun Show from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM on July 7, and the Soul Night from 5:30 PM to 9:50 PM on July 8. The program features rituals, blessings, welcome dances, Indigenous sweethearts show, Amis tribal performances, Bunun Sun Shooting, as well as events such as the Badagis Welcome Ceremony, legendary rituals, Puyuma Flower Wreath Jump, Indigenous food street, and handicraft exhibitions and sales.

The “Harvest Festival” was originally the most important seasonal ritual in the Amis tribe’s ceremonial calendar. In recent years, it has gradually united more Indigenous groups and evolved into one of Taiwan’s major tourism festivals. This year’s themed events incorporate a variety of tribal traditions and cultural elements, including legendary stories, myths, seasonal customs, social practices, life rituals, worship, and ceremonies, offering visitors a rich experience of Indigenous culture.
