28,000 participants set new record in annual Sun Moon Lake Swim

The annual Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Festival has entered its 30th edition and is set to begin on September 16 at 08:00. This year, a total of 1,336 teams and 28,390 participants have registered, including international swimmers from 33 countries across five continents. In addition, from September 14 to 16, hotels around the lake area will host the President Fish Festival. On September 15, there will also be the Nantou International Super Triathlon—Sun Moon Lake Cross-Swim, as well as an evening event called the Night of the Swim, featuring a performance by Golden Melody Award-winning Mandopop singer Show Luo.

This year’s Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival kicks off with the “Nantou Super Triathlon Series” jointly organized by Nantou County, featuring the swim, Wuling Cycling, and Zhongtan Marathon. The first event, the Sun Moon Lake Cross-Swim, will take place on September 15 at 09:00. That evening at 19:00, the Swim Night at Ita Thao Pier Square will conclude with a water fireworks show.

The main Sun Moon Lake International Swimming event on September 16 will start at 08:00. Participants will depart from Zhaowu Pier and finish at Ita Thao Pier, covering a waterway of approximately 3,000 meters. The New Gong Temple’s Kaizhang Goddess of the Sea will also be part of this year’s swim, with 66 devotees accompanying the sacred statue. The swim event has been certified by the International Olympic Committee and is recognized globally as a benchmark for long-distance open-water swimming due to its scale, difficulty, and sustainability—it is the world’s largest swimming event.

Additionally, the President Fish Festival hosted by hotels around the Sun Moon Lake area from September 14 to 16 will not only feature a special culinary experience over three days but will also include a President Fish fry release at Shuishe Pier at 07:30 on September 16, with an expected release of 10,000 fish fry.
