Next year's Taipei Lantern Festival will move to the Taipei Expo Park, turning Zhongshan North Road into a "Sea of Happiness Lanterns"

The Taipei Lantern Festival has been held around the National Father Memorial Hall, Civic Plaza, and the Taipei City Hall area for five years. In 2013, the Taipei Lantern Festival will be held for the first time in the "Fine Arts and Yuanshan Park" area of the Taipei Expo Park. The event will take place from February 21 to March 3, 2013, lasting 11 days; in addition, the "Sea of Happiness Lanterns" on Zhongshan North Road will light up early, starting February 6, 2013, to build up a joyful atmosphere for the Lunar New Year and attract festive tourists.

Starting February 6, 2013, the Taipei City Government will set up a 2,900-meter-long lantern tunnel on the central median strips of Sections 1 to 3 of Zhongshan North Road. Huang Lü-jin-ju, Director of the Civil Affairs Bureau, said that Zhongshan North Road has a long history and carries many collective memories of modern Taipei residents as well as Japanese, American, and Southeast Asian immigrants. It is rich in human stories, such as the Tiaotong business district, which retains distinctive food culture dating back to the Japanese colonial period, the Shuangcheng business district, which introduced American drinking culture during the U.S. military presence, and the supermarkets and restaurants that gradually developed alongside the consumption patterns of Southeast Asia due to the influx of foreign laborers after the opening of northern ports. With its vibrant international cultural ambiance and reflections of Taipei’s modern urban development, Zhongshan North Road was chosen as the premier site for the “2013 Taipei Lantern Festival” lantern displays. A variety of colorful lanterns full of traditional festive spirit, paired with local historical elements, will create a “Sea of Happiness Lanterns.”
