One-day Butterfly-Watching Tour in Puli: Enjoy a Free Butterfly-Themed Meal

This October, Sun Moon Lake is bustling with activity. Aside from the five-weekend-long “2012 Sun Moon Lake International Fireworks & Music Carnival,” the Taomi Community in Puli Township will hold a “Dancing with Butterflies” one-day butterfly-watching tour on October 24. The event will feature guided tours by professional interpreters, butterfly-themed meals prepared with plants that serve as butterfly food sources and nectar plants, planting activities for butterfly host and nectar plants, and DIY craft workshops. The tour is limited to 80 participants and is completely free of charge.

Between 1960 and 1975, Puli was blessed with ideal natural conditions—not only were butterflies seen fluttering everywhere, but the town’s butterfly processing industry also ranked first in the world. However, economic development led to the destruction of butterfly habitats, and the once-thriving butterfly population in Puli has since declined. Since 2011, the New Homeland Cultural and Educational Foundation has focused on butterflies, using methods such as field research, educational programs, and habitat restoration in hopes of reviving Puli’s reputation as the “Butterfly Kingdom.” A survey of butterfly resources along Puli’s butterfly-watching trails conducted from April 2011 to March 2012 revealed over 210 species of butterflies in the area—half of all butterfly species found in Taiwan—with 137 species alone in the Taomi Community.

To allow visitors to take part in the experience of restoring Puli’s Butterfly Kingdom, the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration and the Taomi New Homeland Cultural and Educational Foundation have jointly organized the Taomi Butterfly-Watching Tour. The event will take place in the ecological village of Taomi, featuring guided tours of the community’s butterfly-watching trails by professional guides, hands-on activities like making frog or insect models, and DIY craft workshops using local natural materials.
