A film to save a century-old sugar factory: The domestic movie "Dream Sugar Factory" to start shooting in Tainan

A domestic film — "Dream Sugar Factory" — born from an orchestra's mission to prevent the demolition of a century-old sugar factory, is set to begin shooting in Tainan this October. Xie Shi, leader of the "Ten Drums Percussion Group," said the motivation behind making this film is that the century-old sugar factory was originally slated for demolition. However, moved by the memories it has given to Taiwanese society, they hope to invite the public to the cinema to support the "Save the Century-Old Sugar Factory" campaign through watching the film, ensuring the factory continues to coexist with Taiwan.

The film tells the story of three childhood best friends who, inspired by a video game, discover a wish-granting magic to save one of their classmates who suddenly falls seriously ill. In the process, they also manage to restart a long-shut-down sugar factory. The female lead is played by Lu Mingjun, who portrays a teacher and acts alongside seven lively children. Lu Mingjun joked that she will do her best to “manage” these seven “aliens.”

"Dream Sugar Factory" is expected to shoot at various locations including the Ten Drums Culture Village, Ren De Sugar Factory, Xin Ying Sugar Factory, Wu Shu Lin Sugar Factory, Jiangnan Resort, and Liouying Chi Mei Hospital. Chen Jun’an, Director of the Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau, said over 90% of the film’s scenes will be shot in Tainan. By using the film to promote Tainan's attractions and revitalize the century-old sugar factory, it aims to increase attention and spark new discussions. Director Yang Mengju, who hails from Guanmiao in Tainan, is believed to be able to capture the unique energy of the local land. The film will start shooting in October at the Ren De Sugar Factory in Tainan, wrap up by the end of November, and is scheduled for release during the summer of 2013.
