Building Kaohsiung’s Heavy Sailboat Base: Xingda Port Launches One-Day Experience Courses

For those who have tried kayaking, heavy sailboats, and other water activities at Xingda Port in Kaohsiung, are you still captivated by the thrill of sailing across the water and feeling the refreshing sea breeze? With Xingda Fishing Port’s excellent stability making it suitable for water activities all year, the Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau, aiming to develop the area into a training and promotional base for heavy sailboat sports, has launched group one-day ocean leisure activity courses as well as five-day basic and beginner-level coastal navigation heavy sailboat courses in collaboration with Aletheia University. The heavy sailboat-related courses are certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA), and participants who pass the certification exam upon completion can earn ASA101 and ASA103 certifications. This allows water activity enthusiasts not only to enjoy a rare heavy sailboat experience but also to gain internationally recognized qualifications through the courses.

The newly launched “Ocean Leisure Activity Program” includes three courses: platform canoe ocean leisure cruises, basic small sailboat experiences, and heavy sailboat leisure exploration courses. Each course lasts one day, with main content covering sailboat introductions, equipment maintenance, basic operation, capsizing self-rescue, and sailing techniques. Course fees range from NT$1,800 to NT$2,500. As for the “Heavy Sailboat Basic and Beginner-Level Coastal Navigation Course,” it spans five days, consisting of one day of theoretical instruction and four days of practical training. Key course topics include the history of sailing, embarkation etiquette, international collision regulations, maritime knots, and navigation principles and skills.

The Heavy Sailboat Basic and Beginner-Level Coastal Navigation Course is an internationally certified program authorized by the American Sailing Association (ASA), one of the world’s top three yacht certification bodies. Upon completing the course and passing the certification exam, participants will receive ASA101 and ASA103 certifications — internationally recognized credentials highly sought after by those wishing to rent boats abroad or become yacht tour guides. Since its launch in July this year, six sessions have been held, with 30 participants earning course completion certificates, including 12 who have obtained the ASA101 and ASA103 certifications.
