Located in the former office building of Sri Lanka’s most famous architect, Geoffrey Bawa, this chic Colombo café and restaurant is almost a rare beautiful oasis in this somewhat chaotic city. Before entering the main part of the building, you’ll first come across an elegant atrium adorned with small rectangular pools, with an open-air gallery lining the arcade that displays artworks such as paintings, photographs, and sculptures. There’s also a shop selling reasonably priced, uniquely designed household items and groceries—feeling much like the boutique shops you’d find inside art galleries in Europe, definitely worth a visit.

The café itself is a semi-open space, facing another atrium shaded by a canopy. Long wooden tables display that day’s desserts, while leather armchairs and black-and-white striped cushions offer a wonderfully relaxed and cozy vibe. The current location of the lounge bar was once Bawa’s office, and even his original desk remains in place.

In addition to a wide variety of coffees and black teas (starting from 250 Rs), HowToTrip Gallery Café also offers a selection of cocktails, red and white wines, and spirits. As for food, the menu is based on Sri Lankan and other Asian cuisines but adapted to international dining trends—with particularly outstanding vegetable dishes. For those not worried about calories, go for a pudding. Sipping a drink at one of Colombo’s must-visit spots is the best way to soak in the atmosphere at a minimal cost.
