Recreating the Pioneering History of Early Settlers – The Community Culture Festival Revives Old Taichung Memories

Organized by the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, the Community Culture Festival has become an annual highlight for local neighborhoods. This year’s event will be held from November 6 to 10 at the HuiZhong Building of the new Taichung City Government Complex and the plaza in front of the city hall, under the theme “Urban-Rural Together: Communities Showcase Treasures.” In addition to static achievement exhibitions, community industry souvenirs, creative cultural product markets, stage performances, community crafts, food, and other interactive experiences, the static exhibition of the “Taichung Story House”—a selected work of the “One District, One Story” project—will recreate old Taichung’s growth memories from earlier times. These include the pioneering hardships of early settlers at “BoPo Holding Child” Temple at Jiufangshan, the “Xichuan Traditional Wedding Procession Group” preserving folk performance arts, and Shigang’s “Five Blessings Arrival” sacred tree. Different eras of Taichung will be brought back to life, passing on local culture.

The first event of this year’s Community Culture Festival series is the Static Achievement Exhibition, which kicks off on November 6. It includes achievements from Taichung’s community-building sites and district offices, as well as community souvenir results. For example, Wufeng’s Tonglin Community developed “Art Touring Tonglin Eco House” inspired by the village bird, the owl; the South District Office collaborated with Taiwan Match Story Museum to create the fun and delicious “Fan-A-Huo” specialty product; the Wuguang Tianzhuang Theater Association incorporated local legends into a rural theater; the Shaken District Office combined cultural heritage sites with the “Xiaoyun Lantern” and a fan-shaped guide map of featured sights.

Additionally, the main event will take place on November 10, featuring a Community Starlight Boulevard competition and various community performances and contests. On-site displays will showcase the achievements of Taichung’s district offices under the “One District, One Feature Plan” for 2011. That day will also feature dragon-eye wood puppets from Wufeng’s Tonglin Community, DIY paper-cutting of old street heritage from Renhe Community, Taiwanese match cookies from the South District Office, millet handicrafts by the Indigenous Xiangchuan Agricultural Leisure Tourism Promotion Association, lacquerware creative products from the Fengyuan District Office, children’s toy story paintings from Hengshan Community, persimmon cakes from the Gratitude Care Association’s Persimmonful Garden, and insect bamboo weaving DIY from the Shigen District Office—70 types and 1,800 free creative interactive experiences for the public.
