Autumn Trip to Alishan: Witness the Spectacular Sunrise, Sea of Clouds, Maple Redness, and Sunset Glow

The cool autumn season is perfect for hiking and admiring natural beauty. In autumn, Alishan, with its large day-night temperature differences and suitable humidity, is the best time to enjoy the “Five Wonders of Alishan”: sunrise, sea of clouds, sunset glow, forests, and forest railways. Visiting Alishan to admire the maple leaves is another popular autumn activity, with the best viewing period around late November to early December.

At an altitude of over 2,200 meters, the plants on Alishan undergo chemical reactions in their anthocyanins due to the large temperature difference between day and night, causing the trees to don vibrant red and yellow hues. Alisha’s foliage-changing plants include trident maple, red maple, green maple, American tulip tree, ginkgo, and even cherry blossoms turn red in autumn before gently falling, storing nutrients for their next bloom. Prime spots for viewing Alishan’s red foliage include the Dui Gaoyue Station, in front of the Alishan Hotel, near the Highway 18 kilometer markers 89–104, and the Tfuya Ancient Trail. The best time for viewing varies depending on climate and airflow, but is estimated to be most stunning around late November to early December.

 

Additionally, in autumn, Alishan often sees a thermal insulation effect caused by cold air descending from the mountaintop and warm air rising from the valley, creating a surging “sea of clouds” that resembles a vast ocean. Within Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, the sea of clouds in the morning and evening each have their unique charm. In the morning, you can take the forest train or walk to the Ogasawara Observation Deck to enjoy the sunrise and rosy clouds rising from the Yushan Mountain Range, as well as the sea of clouds above Shennong Village in Xinyi Township, Nantou County, making you feel as if you’re walking on clouds. In the evening, head to the Ogasawara Observation Deck, Ciyun Observation Deck, Alishan Hotel, outside the main gate ticket office, the Alishan Station platform, or at kilometer 89 on Alishan Highway to admire the magnificent sea of clouds set against the backdrop of Mount Tara, the sacred mountain of the Tsou people.
