Ice fishing on Taipei streets as Korean winter festival kicks off

To promote Korea’s rich winter tourism offerings and unique ice festivals, the Korea Tourism Organization is holding the “2012 Korea Ski & Winter Festival Carnival” at the circular plaza on the first floor of Pacific SOGO Department Store Zhongxiao Branch in Taipei from now until November 25. The event will feature traditional Korean games such as shuttlecock kicking and arrow tossing, opportunities to try on beautiful hanbok or stylish snowsuits, and a wealth of free information on Korean winter festivals. There will also be performances by Korea’s super-popular show "JUMP," lively and entertaining acts by traditional Korean street performers, and a simulated version of Korea’s famous ice fishing activity for children to experience.

During the five-day event, from November 21 to 23, every evening at 20:00, food and travel writer Wen Shikai, Korean KBS program representative in Taiwan Professor Hsu Yiling, and Hallyu editor Zhang Yuqi will share their interesting experiences traveling in Korea. The weekend of November 24–25 will be the climax of the “2012 Korea Ski & Winter Festival Carnival ~ Snow Ski & Fun in Korea” event, with continuous exciting activities from 11:00 in the morning to 21:30 in the evening. In addition to ski instructors teaching skiing techniques, visitors can try on snow boots and boards and experience walking on ice firsthand. On Saturday afternoon, there will be a special K-POP demonstration and lesson by KNIGHT, allowing participants to dance like Hallyu stars. The event will also include free snowman-making workshops, limited to 160 participants over the two days, so everyone can make and take home their own little snowman. As for the most fun part of Korean winter festivals — “ice fishing” — a simulated version will be available for children to try.

In addition, the highly anticipated Korean hit performance "JUMP" will be shown at 16:00 on November 24 and 16:30 on November 25. This traditional Korean martial arts comedy, which has brought joy around the world, transcends nationality and language barriers through its wordless, purely physical performance style, immersing audiences in the show. Featuring traditional Korean disciplines such as taekwondo, flying kicks, and kung fu, the actors use no props, relying solely on expressive movement, sound, music, superior martial arts skills, and elasticity to seemingly fly and leap across the stage. It’s a comedy performance perfect for the whole family.
