The Taitung County Taimali Township New Year’s Eve party and 2013 first light of dawn event were held at the Taimali Dawn Welcoming Memorial Park, operating from 8:00 PM on December 31, 2011 to 11:00 AM on January 1, 2012. The Taimali Township New Year and dawn welcoming event has been held for many consecutive years, and the 2000 event that marked the first light of the new millennium attracted tens of thousands of tourists and international guests, thus gaining great fame. The Millennium Dawn Welcoming Memorial Park was listed as a top-quality pilgrimage site for visitors. One can stand under the pavilion in the Millennium Dawn Park or stroll along the beach, gazing at the Pacific Ocean to watch the sunrise and take in the vast seascape.

All participants in this event will receive a “Flying Disc of the Sun” souvenir. The activities include indigenous song and dance performances, performances by popular bands, New Year’s Eve countdown, fireworks display, lucky draw, stargazing experience, traditional and wind instrument performances, dawn welcoming flag-raising ceremony, release of prayer balloons, beach cleanup, and beach parasailing shows. Additionally, the 2nd Bikini Beach Run was held. To encourage camping enthusiasts to visit Taimali, the first 300 tents pitched at the Taimali Millennium Memorial Park before December 31, 2011 could, upon registration at the service desk on the event day, receive a NT$300 discount voucher per tent. Local agricultural specialties, indigenous traditional cuisine, and indigenous handicrafts were also exhibited and sold on-site.
Taimali Township Chief Cheng Zhengjun stated that through this New Year and dawn welcoming event, the township hopes to attract visitors from across the nation. In addition to the exciting series of New Year events, he also recommends visiting Jinchishean Mountain to watch the sunrise and admire the sea of clouds, or heading to Jingu Hot Springs for a relaxing soak.
