The Revival of Chongnan Book Street: A New Year’s Eve Market with 50,000 Books at Special Prices of NT$10

Celebrating the New Year’s holiday in 2013, Taipei offers a unique literary experience. To help more people rediscover the charm of Chongnan Book Street, the Chongnan Book Street Promotion Association held a cultural and creative market event over the four-day New Year’s holiday at 228 Peace Memorial Park...

The Taipei City Government Department of Economic Development stated that Chongnan Book Street was once an important hub for book sales in Taipei, holding special historical value and significance, with over 100 bookstores at its peak. In recent years, due to economic challenges and competition from online bookstores, local shops have faced significant difficulties. Through this event, the city government hopes to promote the stories and charm of the book street, while attracting more visitors through special discount offers.

Shen Rongyu, chairman of the Taipei Chongnan Book Street Promotion Association, said that this market event specially invited historian Zhuang Yongming to sign copies of the newly republished "Old Streets of Taipei" on-site, and he will also provide guided tours of Chongnan Book Street, helping the public uncover the old stories of the area. Additionally, the event features a special sale of over 500 types and nearly 50,000 carefully selected books at NT$10 each, along with bestsellers at a limited 31% discount (69% of the original price) and selected children’s books starting at NT$50, inviting citizens to easily embrace a bookish lifestyle. During the event, there will also be guided tours sharing stories of the book street, held daily from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, where volunteers from the archives association will explain the history of Chongnan Book Street, with displays of vintage photos and stories.
