Live Broadcast of Zubin Mehta’s New Year Concert by the Israel Philharmonic in Kaohsiung

The world-renowned conductor Zubin Mehta will lead the Israel Philharmonic on a visit to Taiwan on January 3, 2013, to perform at the Taipei National Concert Hall, where Phalaenopsis orchids bloom with elegant grace, for the 2013 New Year Concert, featuring lively dance pieces by the Strauss family. This is the first New Year concert in Taiwan to be performed by an internationally acclaimed conductor leading a top-tier orchestra. On the day of the concert, the performance will also be live-streamed simultaneously at the Circular Plaza of the Kaohsiung Cultural Center, with free ticket collection available starting now at nine locations including the Kaohsiung Cultural Center and the Dadong Art and Culture Center.

During this 2013 New Year Concert, conductor Zubin Mehta, who has led the Vienna New Year’s Concert four times, will perform classic pieces such as “Voices of Spring,” “Roses from the South,” and “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss II at the Taipei National Concert Hall. The concert will be exclusively live-streamed simultaneously at the Circular Plaza of the Kaohsiung Cultural Center, with the broadcast starting at 7:45 PM on January 3, 2013, and doors opening for ticket holders at 6:45 PM that evening. Ticket collection runs from now until January 3, 2013, at nine locations including the Kaohsiung Cultural Center, the Dadong Art and Culture Center, the Kaohsiung Social Education Center, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the Gangshan Cultural Center, the Kaohsiung MRT Nangangshan Station, and three branches of the Kaohsiung Public Library — the Sanmin Branch, the Yangming Branch, and the Zuoxin Branch. Ticket collection hours are from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with a limit of two tickets per person.

 

The tradition of the New Year Concert dates back to December 31, 1847, when on an outdoor stage in the suburbs of Vienna, the patriarch of the Strauss family, Johann Strauss I, conducted while playing the violin, leading his own touring orchestra. The concert continued until the stroke of midnight, followed by a series of waltzes and polkas, with the audience dancing joyfully to the music, creating a lively celebration that lasted until dawn. This tradition has since evolved into a universal celebration transcending national and ethnic boundaries, with orchestras across Europe and America holding distinctive New Year concerts every year.
