As the Lunar New Year of the Snake approaches, major New Year markets across Taiwan have started gearing up for the festive season.

2013Celebrate the Year in Taipei – Taipei New Year Market
Dates: January 25, 2013 – February 8, 2013
Activities:
In addition to the classic Dihua Street market, various districts and business areas around Taipei City are also hosting exciting events. These include shopping discounts, lucky draw gift bags, and event prizes such as imported brand watches, festive gift hampers, premium 3C electronics, and meal or accommodation vouchers from local hospitality businesses — with total prize value estimated at over NT$400,000.
Taipei Underground Mall will launch its first New Year Passport on January 15, distributing 50,000 copies that come with gift coupons and discount vouchers from 120 stores. They can be picked up for free at visitor centers around Taipei.

2013Taichung Tianjin Road New Year Market
Dates: January 26, 2013 – February 9, 2013
Activities:
11:00–12:00, January 26
Opening event “Snake Surprise: Gifts Fall from the Sky” (at Daya Road), featuring 100NT$ clothing discount vouchers and raffle tickets showered from above.
On designated dates, there will also be a “Lucky Red Envelope” event, giving out 2,013 limited-edition snake-year red envelopes exclusive to the Tianjin New Year Market. Other activities include shopping-spree lucky draws with prizes such as one car, two Giant electric bikes, and three iPads.
2013Tainan Xinhua New Year Market
Dates: February 2, 2013 – February 8, 2013
Activities:
Regular events include one-dollar item auctions, flash sales of half-price goods, and lucky draws with over NT$200,000 worth of prizes. Local shops in Xinhua District offer an 20% discount during the event period, and free return bus rides with Xingnan Bus when shopping.
In addition to the traditional Lunar New Year goods and souvenir zones along Zhongzheng Road Old Street, plus a festive department store section, there’s also a food court for visitors to explore. The city government has especially brought in 21 food stalls. In collaboration with seven temples in Xinhua District launching the “Seven-Star Blessing Incense Bag” event, this year sees 107 more booths than last year, with expanded space promising a lively atmosphere.
2013New Taipei Colorful New Year Market
Dates: February 1, 2013 – February 8, 2013
Activities:
Starting February 1, the New Taipei City Government is holding the eight-day “2013 New Taipei Colorful New Year Market” at the Civic Plaza in front of the city hall. This edition has attracted the highest number of vendors in previous years, with 100 top-quality businesses carefully selected by organizers and the public to offer festive goods.
In addition to essential New Year Market elements such as dried goods and festive gifts, the market also features special cultural zones highlighting Hakka, indigenous, and international flavors, a guaranteed-fresh produce and seafood section, and a floral display area full of seasonal charm — creating a whole new image for the New Taipei Colorful New Year Market.
2013Happy Yilan Year – Everything Feels Lucky in Yilan
Dates: February 2, 2013 – February 11, 2013
Activities:
The Joyful Yilan New Year Celebration turns 20 this year, making it the only large-scale festival in Taiwan that celebrates the Lunar New Year and also the longest-running one of its kind. In addition to the Year of the Snake commemorative red envelopes available for application from December 28 to January 31, 2013, free Year of the Snake spring couplets will also be offered to the public.
The event will take place at the Luodong Cultural Factory, with the following series of activities:
February 2, 10:00 — Street Parade Performance
February 2, 10:00–12:00 — Calligraphy by Renowned Artists
February 2 & 3, 10:00–16:00 — Cultural Market
February 3, 10:00–12:00 — Traditional New Year Dishes from Veterans’ Villages and New Immigrant Communities

2013Kaohsiung Celebrates the New Year – Shopping Districts Offer Millions in Blessings
Event Period: January 18, 2013 – February 24, 2013
Event Details:
The Kaohsiung New Year Goods Street is centered around Sanfeng Middle Street, along with about 700 shops across 15 popular shopping districts in Kaohsiung such as Xinqijiang and Qishan. Shoppers who spend a minimum of NT$100 in a single transaction can collect one stamp. Collecting a total of five stamps from two different districts makes you eligible to enter the lucky draw, where prizes mainly include 3C electronics, with a total prize pool worth nearly NT$2 million.
2013 Hualien Spring Festival New Year Goods Market
Event Period: February 2, 2013 – February 8, 2013
Event Details:
The Hualien County Government Agriculture Department will host a grand Spring Festival New Year Goods Market along the section of Futing Road between the intersections with Zhonghua Road and Fujian Street, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. In addition to traditional New Year goods, the market will feature local agricultural products from Hualien, promoting high-quality specialty agricultural and regional products.
