The Hakkas' Mother Figure Comes to Life in a Cultural and Creative Bamboo Market – Wang Qilang’s Art Exhibition Kicks Off Now

From now until February 28, the Hsinchu City Cultural Affairs Bureau will host the “Wang Qilang Art Exhibition – ‘Hsinchu’s Xiangshan Mom: Cultural Creativity & Chao Mountain Tourism’” at the Hsinchu Railway Art Village. This exhibition showcases Wang Qilang’s artistic creations, the Xiangshan Mom cultural and creative products, and Chao Mountain tourism, presenting the vibrant stories of Chao Mountain community through three main themes. A total of 80 outstanding works will be displayed. During the exhibition period, creative competitions, Chao Mountain cuisine tastings, and one-day Chao Mountain tour experiences will be held. On February 28, a lucky draw will select 20 people to join the one-day tour for free. Additionally, on February 16 at 10:00 AM, a free DIY creative activity for elementary school students to make Xiangshan Mom hydroponic pets will be held, with a limit of 30 participants. Registration is open from now until February 14.

In recent years, Wang Qilang has focused on the image of Xiangshan Mom as the core theme, engaging in cultural and creative development. He is currently promoting two novel and practical cultural products: “Hydroponic Pets” and “Mom’s Bento.” In addition, to better understand the ecology and local culture of Chao Mountain, Wang Qilang has used his camera to capture the ever-changing sea and sky, documenting the rich and diverse scenery of Chao Mountain, thereby integrating the unique local characteristics and culture of the community.

 

The Chao Mountain community boasts abundant cultural resources and natural landscapes. Its profound cultural heritage nurtured the artist Wang Qilang, a native of Hsinchu. He studied comics and creative marketing under the renowned domestic cartoonist Liu Qinxing and brought the image of the Hakkas’ auntie into three-dimensional form, which became hugely popular. One of his sculptural artworks, the “Guardian Statue of Jianshi Township – The Atayal Warrior and Jingping Bridge Series Story,” is located in Jianshi Township. Furthermore, after being exposed to indigenous cultures, Wang Qilang deeply felt that both indigenous and Hakka cultures needed further cultivation and development. He returned to his hometown, the Chao Mountain community, to develop local cultural art. Drawing inspiration from the hardworking story of his mother, he depicted the resilient spirit of Hakka women. His artwork “Mom Carrying Firewood” was selected in 2011 as the theme for Hsinchu City’s Model Mothers Commendation, making Xiangshan Mom a representative figure of model mothers.
